A concrete sleeper is a type of railway sleeper in the UK and Australia, and in North America known as a railroad sleeper/railroad tie/cross sleeper; it is a rectangular support made of concrete for the rails in a railway track. Especially used in high-speed railway line construction, usually the railway sleeper transfers the load to the track ballast and roadbed, keeping the rails stable and keeping their spacing correct. Advantages of concrete sleepers
Strong stability. Compared with wooden sleepers, the weighted concrete sleepers make the track more stable. In addition, concrete sleepers will not deform with temperature changes.
Long service life. Concrete sleepers are waterproof, sun-proof, and corrosion-resistant, and have a longer service life than wooden sleepers.
Better fire resistance. Concrete sleepers are more resistant to fire than wooden sleepers.
Good insulation. Since the material of concrete sleepers is composed of cement, sand, stone, etc., the insulation is very good. Therefore, it is suitable for use in lines with track circuits.
Low maintenance cost. Concrete sleepers require less maintenance, which reduces ongoing costs and reduces track closures.
Environmentally friendly. In Europe, wooden sleepers are usually soaked in creosote, which is not good for the environment. Concrete sleepers are more environmentally friendly.
